  45.    What is a UTI Driver?
  46.  
  47.       The Universal Text Interface (UTI) is a set of programs which
  48.       allow mail reader and network mail software to be compatible with
  49.       virtually any BBS software.  It consists of programs which
  50.       generate specifically formatted text files which are read by the
  51.       reader and netmail software.
  52.  
  53.       The "Executive Host-UTI Driver" is a set of seven programs
  54.       described below, written by Steve Wood, Sysop of the WOODSHED.
  55.       This document describes these programs, their purpose, the proper
  56.       implementation of the Executive Host-UTI Driver, and the files
  57.       that will be accessed/used by these same program files.
  58.  
  59.       It should be noted that although the UTI standard was developed
  60.       by Kip Compton.  He ethically cannot, and will not, endorse any
  61.       specific UTI driver.
  62.  
  63.       Users of this particular UTI should understand that it follows
  64.       the specifications set forth for the UTI Standard, Revision 2,
  65.       except that this version DOES NOT SUPPORT PRIVATE MESSAGES.  The
  66.       registered version does support private messages.

  68.       The User of the Executive Host-UTI Driver programs recognizes
  69.       that neither Steve Wood nor Kip Compton can be held responsible
  70.       or liable for damages suffered as a result of the improper use,
  71.       proper use, or inability to use this software.

  73.       Several terms need to be clarified before proceeding to the
  74.       definitions of the programs and files.  A conference is a message
  75.       base area, which is separate from other message base areas, and is
  76.       usually intended to house messages concerning a certain topic.
  77.       A message number is a number corresponding to a specific message.
  78.       No two messages in the same conference should have the same
  79.       number, and numbers should be allocated sequentially.  The range
  80.       of message numbers supported is from 1 to 999999.

  82.       For ease of finding and calling, all UTI driver programs should
  83.       be residing in the DOS defined PATH or located in the subdirectory
  84.       for the Mail Door or the subdirectory containing the PCRelay
  85.       software.

  137.         This UTI driver software can only be used by version 1.7
  138.         of the Executive Host BBS Software.  Due to recent file
  139.         structure changes, this UTI cannot be used on earlier
  140.         versions.

  143.    1. Unzip the UTI files so that they will reside in either a DOS
  144.       subdirectory defined by your Path statement, or in the same
  145.       one as your reader/net mail program.
  146.  
  147.    2. Put the following line into your autoexec.bat file
  148.  
  149.              SET XHOST = d:\path
  150.  
  151.       This drive and path is the location of your Executive Host
  152.       BBS software.  THIS LINE MUST NOT END IN A \.
  153.

  155.    3. Go to the TELIX configuration screen and change the General
  156.       Options as shown.
  157.

  160.    4. Since none of UTI programs updates the MESSAGE.NDX file, it
  161.       is recommended that you PACK.EXE all of your MESSAGE.TXT files
  162.       daily.  If you are part of a large echoing network, this daily
  163.       pack should take place at the end of your EVENT before restarting
  164.       the board.

  169.    Using the UTI with PCRelay (tm).

  171.    1. Run the Config program supplied with the PCRelay (tm) Software.
  172.    2. Select View/Change Configuration
  173.    3. Select System Type
  174.    4. Choose Universal Text Interface Revision 2

  182.    Using the UTI with Megamail (tm)

  184.    1. Install the Megamail (tm) according to the documentation.

  186.    2. Create a batch file to execute when the door is opened.

  208.          to create the  UTIDOOR.TXT file used by the mail door.

  222.  Reminder - A caller Should use Executive Host to Join a conference.
  223.             This is the ONLY way to establish the caller as a valid
  224.             member of the conference.  The Executive Host-UTI Driver
  225.             could add a caller to the conference 'users' file, but
  226.             this would circumvent the Sysop's control.

  232.    Version 1 of the Executive Host-UTI is a Shareware program and requires
  233.    registration for its continued use. The registration and licensing
  234.    fee is $15.00.  If this is too steep send what you think that it is
  235.    worth.
